Somehow, while I was changing diapers, encouraging little people to eat their veggies, potty training and infinite other mothering chores I forgot I had a head.
I know, I feel bad for every single person who has been forced to look at my head for most of the last 5 years. I just didn't know I was rocking such a sad, sad, SAD head of shaggy, neglected dog hair. I am officially sorry. And it is with a sigh of relief that I introduce you to my new hair.
I have a lot to learn about doing my own fabulous hair. I really underestimated how much product I should be using and this morning after doing my hair myself I looked much fluffier. Note to self: pile on the gunk for sleek, shiny hair. I feel like I should have known to use more product. When I woke up this morning, the morning after the great hair revolution, I felt like my head had been buttered. Gross yes, but lovely, oh sooooo lovely.
Boss Hog and I eloped. We were both in school and living in different provinces and had only enough money to fly to be in one place to be married, not enough for dresses and flowers and wedding-y stuff. I often plan my virtual wedding in my head and think one day we might act on it and renew our vows with the girls. I feel like that one photo album is missing from the history of our little family.
How great is it then that my little brother and his sweet lady have decided to tie the knot in a proper, grown-up person, wedding. I have by no means become rich, but I did go out and buy some new shoes to wear to the blessed event. I have no idea what I had on my feet when I got married. I suspect I wasn't even wearing shoes. But these babies are making up for all that now. I love these shoes. I'm considering marrying them myself.
And her mouth is full of ice cream cake! It's hard to believe that she has been here for four years. Some days she seems so much older that I forget she is still so little. Eden is careful and cautious and precise. She loves reading and baking and talking about being a ballerina. She hates getting wet accidentally, peas and being woken up. She can be so much like me that I fear her teen years. And yet where would I be without her.
You never know who you will get when you have children. They are their own people from the moment they arrive and come with so much to teach their parents about patience and love and wonder that it makes your throat ache just thinking about it.... now I am feeling a bit weepy....
I know that having kids is not the only way to live a full life. But in my life, I know that Eden and Arlo have made me a better person. Hopefully, I can give them respect and freedom and the ability to be whoever they were meant to be.
Oooh baby, it's time to carb-load! We are having this again. Thanks to my auntie and uncle for the flour mill they got us when we got married. Thanks to my in-laws for growing organic spelt for us to grind into flour. Thanks to our egg man, John, and his perky lady hens for laying such nice eggs. Thanks to the girls for getting flour everywhere and enthusiastically cranking out the spelt-ghetti.
Eden thought she died and went to heaven. She HATES tomato sauce and was filled with joy when I presented a bowl of fresh pasta tossed with butter and freshly grated pecorino cheese. She even requested a sprinkling of parsley (she's so sophisticated).
I myself was a cat when I was a little girl. I remember eating Special K out of bowls on the floor with a little girl down the street from me when I was 4 or 5. Yet it came as a bit of a surprise to me the other day when both Eden and Arlo demanded to have cat faces and to eat dishes of cereal and milk off the floor while meowing fiercely. Fiercely.
So now they are cats full time. They haven't got new cat names but Eden is a purple cat and Arlo insists that she is a blue cat. So funny I had to share. I suppose I should get out the sewing machine and make them ears and tails....
Salted caramels are nothing new. And dipped caramels are the first chocolates to disappear from any box entering my house. But seriously, someone should have warned me what would happen if I made them myself. Sigh, I am in love...
Boss Hog and I make dipped chocolates every Christmas for our friends and family. This year (after the mad rush of the holidays was well past) I decided to take on caramels and perfect them for next years giving. And now I have to stop perfecting them or I will surely be twice my natural size by the end of this year.
They are pure love. Soft, creamy caramels dipped in dark chocolate and sprinkled lightly with salt. My husband realized when he saw me slumped in a kitchen chair with chocolate smeared on my mouth that I might trade him in for more sweet, sweet caramel. Yup.
There is something totally reassuring in knowing only the best ingredients went into these chocolates. All natural. No weird, hard to pronounce stabilizers. And yet there is something so dangerous in knowing that most of these ingredients are totally ordinary and rather close to hand every single day in my kitchen. I am not even going to post my recipe. It is too dangerous. It is out there and I will give it to you if you NEED it. But be warned, it is both a blessing and a curse.
